Fall Enduro 2007 Revisited

This is the first one I did aside from the little trailer I did for this one. Long shots, little to no editing using a very inexpensive editing tool. Crappy little camera with a zip tie and duck tape for a handle. I didn't have any fancy helmet or chest attachments for the camera. I used my teeth or rode with one hand. Those were the options. Crazy to see what bikes we were riding at the time. The Niner I was riding just got sold at the Madison swap with the red Niner fork WW is riding in this video. The river bottoms are good again, so hopefully we can get the krew together this spring for a proper enduro and maybe another video?

Hurl rebuilt a rear wheel for me. 240 hub to a Stans Arch rim. After a WFBH, the Great Hawk race in Duluth, 3 hours of CAMBA trails, Ore to Shore and some commutes to work all while rolling on the steel rigid Kelly, the wheel is stong and true. Nice work Thomas!

As I sit broken, staring at the monitor, waiting for someone to tell me what to do, I wonder if when I'm drawing my last breath, years from now (hopefully), will I think back on this and see it as something needed or good. Or will only the most precious, most important things be on my mind? Will I curse the work I do? Will I remember the people I work with? Will I remember leaving Jon sitting at Rojo alone. Drinking by himself, watching the Twins while I wait for someone, who makes just a bit more than I do, to tell me that all the work we've done over the last four hours was for nothing and we'll have to setup a time to try again another night. I hope I don't remember that. I hope I forget it by tomorrow. Parts of today I will remember. Parts of today were beautiful and will never be forgotten.

A few too many and what do you get? Well, if I made any mistakes last night, I am truly sorry. Went out with the work crew for a team happy hour. 1 turned into 4 and then I was out the door. Two would have been the right amount I think. Riding home with a serious buzz from Maple Grove with the daylight waning probably isn't too smart. There were a ton of cars driving every which way and I felt like a target. I rode right by REI, so it seemed like a good idea to stop in for a minute. Probably wasn't a good idea, but my heart was in the right place. In the morning, On my way to work, I lost my new clear lens glasses, so as I was heading south passing Eric's on Hemlock, seeing the "OPEN" sign, I decided I'd stop to take a look there as well. The manager came up and said something about my OOOBS backpack. His name is Mike Berger (I think it was Mike, sorry if I'm not remembering that right). Super good dude. Old schooler. Been around forever. Knew all the goofballs that run this town. As I was looking at glasses, I asked him if he knew Bob very well. He did. We got to talking about Bob and it was really beautiful. I could tell he missed Bob and he had some great stories about him. The kind of stories you only know if your a close friend and workmate with someone. I told Mike a few tales of racing with Bob and the time ticked away. I hope sometime soon we connect again. It did my heart good to talk and remember. With brand new clear lens glasses donned, I rode the hour home feeling great. Worked the buzz down to a respectable level by the time I got to my door and made it in time to tuck Owen into bed. Perfect. I hope you are smiling.

Heard yesterday that a friend of mine, Bob Lind 'Fun Bob', took his own life.

I started racing mountain bikes with Bob on the Eric's team eons ago. We did a few 24 hours of Afton races together. Bob did a bunch of Monday night rides, which is where I think I first met him. He did many series races and I did plenty of after work road rides with him way back when. Bob sold Owen some of his first mountain bikes. I didn't see him very much over that past years, but recently started working in Maple Grove and saw him when I'd stop in at Eriks, where Bob has worked at manager since I've known him. About a month ago we had good long conversation (I was late getting back to work) and Bob was really stoked to be getting back into riding after a few years of not much riding at all.

It's a strange feeling to lose a friend. I'm stunned by it.

I know I have some pictures of Bob stored away somewhere that I'll look for and put up. I also have a story about the fastest tire change I've ever seen done by Bob at Afton. It was something to see.

To ya Bob! You will be missed.

Speaking of Burnsie, I ran into him yesterday. It's the 10th anniversary of the Dak50 and in order to be a part of it, he's rockin' it cowboy style again this year. If you don't know what I mean, he's riding the race dressed like Clint Eastwood in the Good, the bad and the ugly. That's a hard fucking race with all the proper gear on. To do it like it was a cross race that fell on Halloween is pretty much about as bad ass as you're likely to see. So, because Sean is tougher than you and I, from this point forward, when Sean and I are drinking together at a bar, his drinks will be on me, for life.

Ok, the rumors have been flying. Some said it was a sure thing. Others said it would never happen. Some questioned the rational. Well, I'm hear to tell you that it ain't no joke. The fire is hot and it's time to start cookin'!

On July 10th 2010 at 5:30pm, every last one of you damn Kenwoodies and Friends of Kenwood needs to meet at the OLD SHOPPE in Kenwood. After a lot of milling about and getting in the way of store patrons and walkers, we will ride some trails to the north and then head east for a good old fashioned party at One On One Bike Studio in Downtown Minneapolis.

There will be some beer available, but plan on bringing some if you can. Nobody is rich (except Fride), so it's a pot luck kind of thing. Drop something off at OOOBS if you want / can prior to meeting at Kenwood or pick something up on the way or just free load. All styles are welcome.

What's all this about you ask? Well, it was about 5 years ago that the Vitch closed the Shoppe doors for good and so why not have a fucking party to celebrate! As Husker Du said, it makes no sense at all, but that's exactly why we should do it! Not that we need a reason to drink. We all do just fine without one.

Special guest? Maybe...Who knows?? You'll have to show up to find out.

As the kit ordering over the past years has proved, Kenwood Racing is going strong. One idiot even got a Kenwood Racing tattoo if you can believe that shit.

Alright! Let's do this. Shine up your rig and head down to the Shoppe on the 10th. It will be great to see everyone, ride together, have a drink and remember the old days of Kenwood.

Perfect friends from a history of miles. Perfect Sounds from the Teddy Bears. Words from Paul Westerberg sung by an old soul. Not famous but related to one of the few. A perfect cabin in an amusement park. A fire extinguisher the size of a tick in a forest the size of heaven. Coffee made with passion. Bikes so different and so beautiful you just have to smile. Anticipation, food and water for 90 miles of a beautiful dirt ribbon and 10 miles of wanderlust dreams. Trails built by the unreal. A simplistic power showing he's human. A scary euphoric drift and a cry for help. Two saviors giving grace. Friends from a familiar place indeed. Much talk of sustenance and luxury. Steaks and overflowing wishes. Power at the 11th hour. A sprint for the very very middle. Perfect! Then the simplest idea becomes the perfect end. A cold baptism to cool the souls of our feet. We didn't race. We rode and it was absolutely a dream. Turks. 80 years of giving at the helm. A kings meal. Ticks in biblical numbers. No other ending to the day would have been as proper. Craving more. The loggers breakfast and a visit to Wests. As we came to a close and the fuel ran low, the final gesture was to a well spoken 8 year old riding a kind shiny 40 lb Mongoose. We guarded the gem while he secured two bags of chips and a coke with a silver tongue.
